Arup Education Trust
Enhancing the lives of disadvantaged youth through education and skills development

Objectives of the Trust

  • Established in 2011, the Arup Education Trust enhances the quality of lives of historically disadvantaged individuals through education.

  • The Arup Education Trust owns 30% of Arup (Pty) Limited, which is the corporate entity of the Arup group. Arup is the creative force at the heart of many of the world's most prominent projects in the built environment.

  • The Trust is committed to the advancement of women through education and at least 50% of each year's beneficiaries must be women.

  • No beneficiary is required to work for Arup but they are required to study towards a degree in the built environment.

  • All candidates are required to remain in South Africa for three years, post graduation, thereby contributing to the country as a whole.

Trust Programmes

Tertiary Education Programme

Qualifying beneficiaries are selected for the programme before the beginning of the academic year and their support includes tuition fees, textbooks, accommodation and living expenses.

The Trust provides support group sessions throughout the year and beneficiaries have access to the trustees at any time. Each student is required to participate in vacation employment during the bursary period to improve their understanding of the requirements of the job market and workplace.

Secondary School Programme

The secondary school programme is offered to selected grade 11 and 12 learners from impoverished communities and is designed to improve their mathematics and science marks to enable them to gain university acceptance and pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) professions.

The programme is run in partnership with The Chosen, a non-profit organisation (NPO) that coordinates and facilitates the additional tuition for the learners as well as providing them with life-skills training through the THUKEMA programme. The secondary school programme is also a pipeline for the tertiary education programme for learners who wish to pursue a career in the built environment.
