About the Arup Education Trust
Enhancing the lives of disadvantaged youth through education and skills development
Objectives
- Established in 2011, the Arup
Education Trust enhances the
quality of lives of historically
disadvantaged individuals through
education.
- The Arup Education Trust owns 30% of Arup (Pty) Limited, which is the corporate entity of the Arup group. Arup is the creative force at the heart of many of the world's most prominent projects in the built environment.
- The Trust is committed to the advancement
of women through education and
at least 50% of each year's
beneficiaries must be women.
- No beneficiary is required to work
for Arup but they are required to
study towards a degree in the built
environment.
- All candidates are required to remain in South Africa for three years, post graduation, thereby contributing to the country as a whole.
Programmes
Tertiary Education Programme
Qualifying beneficiaries are selected for the programme before the beginning of the academic year and their support includes tuition fees, textbooks, accommodation and living expenses.
The Trust provides support group sessions throughout the year and beneficiaries have access to the trustees at any time. Each student is required to participate in vacation employment during the bursary period to improve their understanding of the requirements of the job market and workplace.
Secondary School Support Programme
The Arup Education Trust (AET) and The Chosen NPO are partners in delivering the THUKEMA Secondary School Support Programme since 2014. THUKEMA is an abbreviation of the Sotho phrase, "Thuto ke Maatla" which means "Knowledge is Power".
The THUKEMA programme provides selected grade 11 and 12 learners from disadvantaged backgrounds extra lessons and support that is designed to improve their mathematics and science marks to enable them to gain university acceptance and pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) professions. THUKEMA is also a pipeline for the tertiary education programme for learners who wish to pursue a career in the built environment.
Board of Trustees
The Arup Education Trust's Board of Trustees provides strategic leadership and governance of the Trust and ensures that the Trust is always aligned with its mission, vision, and values. The Board of Trustees is made up of 3 independent trustees appointed from the industry and 3 Arup appointed Trustees
Beneficiary Development & Support
The Arup Education Trust Beneficiary Development and Support Team oversees the wellbeing of our beneficiaries in our tertiary education programme and supports the Board of Trustees. The THUKEMA secondary school support programme is administered and supported in partnership with The Chosen NPO
